Richardson is a very desirable place to live because it is an affluent inner suburb of Dallas
and Interstate 75 .. Richardson has had substantial increases from 2005 through 2009 when
many other areas of the United States had declining economies. It has a high concentration
of telecommunications companies and has more than 5,000 businesses in Richardson and
includes four of the world’s largest communications/networking companies; Cisco Systems,
Samsung, Fujitsu and Nortel. It was ranked 18th best place to live in the US by Money magazine
In 2008 and 4th best to live in Texas. Business Week ranked it 2d as best place to raise kids
In 2009. In 1972, the population was about 56,000 and their school system consisted of 16
elementary schools, seven junior highs and four high schools with approximately 32,000
students. Settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky in the 1840’s which was inhabited at the time
by Comanche and Caddo Indians, that may explain the reason for Fort Richardson. It was
chartered in 1873 and had a population of 740 by 1940 and grew to 1,300 by 1950.
