LEWISVILLE TEXAS:
Lewisville was incorporated 75 years ago with five cotton gins, two saloons and about 850 residents. The settlement as a community actually started in the 1840’s when the Republic of Texas gave a grant to the Texas Emigration and land Company to settle 600 families in what is now Denton County. Each family was to receive 640 acres and single men 320 acres. Denton County was formed in 1846 when the families arrived. By 1925 with a population 850 residents five cotton gins and two saloons the elected mayor and new group of elected officials rented the front room of “The Woodsmen of the world” for $4.50 monthly rent including the lights and heat. And set spered limits of 18 miph. The population grew to 1500 by 1950. In 1960 the Corps of Engineers had built the Lewisville Lake Dam and US 77, now known as IH35E, became the main road between Lewisville and Dallas. By 1970 the population had grown to about 9200 when a housing boom during the 1970s resulted in a population expansion of close to 25,999 by 1980. The 1990 population grew to 46,500 and is now almost 90,000 people
and 3600 businesses.
